Uh huh...

You need to work on your mixing and the distorted guitar needs a little bit of tweaking on the tone, if you ask me. I mean, really, having the clean guitar completely on the left pan and the distorted guitar completely on the right was just an earache and it made the whole track feel empty. Get that shit more centered and then ad a little bit more. Perhaps some atmospheric effects or something.

Otherwise, I rather enjoyed the song. Good luck to ye.

Shammybaby responds:

Yeah I've just started getting into mixing and it's not as simple as it seems. I appreciate you taking the time to leave me feedback.

We have a winner!

I have to say, when the first recognizable rhythmic beat came in, I was stoked. I always wanted that kind of thing going on in some of my songs, but I don't have electronic powers required to do so. Whether or not you did it on purpose, you really captured a Rob Zombie sound here. Funny thing, he just played a show here a couple days ago.

Now the whole song is great and dandy, grimey, industrial coolness until you hear the ending. What the hell were you thinking with such an abrupt and unexpected ending? I do some weird shit myself, so I can understand if it's symbolic or something, but it was so unsatisfying. It's like being totally drunk, having a ton of fun and then your friend comes into the room, making out with your ex girlfriend with his wank out. It's a total buzz kill. If it weren't for that ending, I'd give it a 10/10. Yeah, that's how bad that ending is.

EvilRaccoon responds:

Hey Rahmemhotep. I made a decisision to stop it suddenly for a reason. When rewatching resident evils i realised that the music would just stop dead. No gradual ending or anything. I always slowly fade out, or bring the song to a close. The disrupting ending I felt made things seem unconclusive, somewhat how you'd feel after fighting a hoard of zombies. There's always more to come.

It was a conscious decision. You'll see what I mean here. How the music is broken up by Marco Beltrami.

Thanks again! I may do another version for you. :)

Nice

8, just because it's not done.

I can see this being a gothic metal song. Hell, if you don't do that with this, I'd happily run off with part of the opening and make it into one. Muahahahaha.

Finish dis shit, mang.

Back-From-Purgatory responds:

Wasn't originally intended to be a gothic metal song... but you never know...

Well!

Yo dawg dis shit be bangin'. No, for real, I didn't expect to find this when I was just surfing through the portal for metal. Reminds me of Japanese metal and it has a very Japanese feel to it. I'm not saying that the Japanese language sounds like Swedish, no, not in the least, only a total fucking idiot would say that.

Despite really liking it, I thought that there was some strange quality about the way you mixed your vocals. Perhaps they need more bass? I'm not sure.

It'd be chill to collab sometime. (you can ignore the sound of my current entries, I have a new mic)

Schleif responds:

thanks a lot man! haha japanese, eh? can't say i know anything about japanese metal, but that's pretty cool i guess haha. yeah, the mixing isn't exactly flawless.. i'll try to work a bit with the bass in the future. thanks again dude, much appreciated!

I see.

I like it a whole fuckin' lot. It's industrial, ambient and XP all at once. The ending was a little.. Too sudden? I think there may have been a better way to end the song. It reminds me of a couple of my old songs and a little bit of the Trans Siberian orchestra.

I see a quickly passing ice covered landscape. Many pictures of frozen structures hit me as I speed by them. Jagged, powder covered structures of ice that seem as though they could uproot themselves and dance the delicate ways of a ballerina. Beyond them is a seemingly flat landscape, frostbitten and clean.

This is without my good headphones on and coming out of computer speakers but I think it's orchestrated quite well. Didn't have too many problems with it, myself. Although I do feel like you are holding back here. Wrong? Right? Who knows?

Kirbyfemur responds:

Lol the ending was that way because of the 4 minute limit, and because I had gotten to that part of the song and just was like, "you know what? I'm just going to leave it like this for now until the competition is over."

So that issue will be adressed later, I am glad that someone likes it :3

It seems that...

This is pretty ok, contrary to what I thought it was going to be. Now there were problems with it though, like the choir VST or w/e you kids call them was too quiet. The other major problem would be a sudden ending. Do you have the official soundtrack? All the songs loop but they fade out at the end of them on the OST.

I suggest tweaking it a little bit and then re-uploading it but hey, that's just me and I'm an immense fan of the music from Final Fantasy 7. Good work!

DesoloZ responds:

no no no thank u i need to know this thank you :D

Ugh...

I love music from around the world and study various instruments and styles and this was an awkward sounding, horribly synthetic piece of music. The computer thing you used to replace real Er Hu (which has the sound of a singing woman) was extremely obvious of being a synth until the end. I don't know what you did at the end (I'm sure your composition was more trying at that point) but it sounded much better there. It's probably the complimenting instruments making it sound better.

As for the rest of the song with the Chinese cymbals and various percussion and what not; It was unsatisfactory to my tastes. The cymbals were a little loud and it was pretty generic of a foreigner trying at Chinese music all together. The synth of a whatever that was trying to be (koto, guqin, guzheng, etc.) was really 'lame' for lack of a better term. I was hearing some sort of noise out of the right pan at 1:34 and whether that was intentional or not I liked it and it made me think of fire burning. I thought the song was just 'OK' and that you maybe should have focused on a more orchestral piece than a percussion filled piece.

Even though I didn't like it, that doesn't mean that others won't though! I wish you the best of luck in the contest.

Naerbu responds:

Well what am I supposed to do? Buy Chinese instruments to win a NG contest?... Maybe you have the time and money, but I don't.

The noise you were hearing from the right side was a long wind sample.

The ErHu was sampled and compiled into a VST not synthesized. I did my best to find "real" instruments and simulate them as if they were actually being played.

Thank you for the review

Oh, sweet!

This is really cool! It does actually make me picture mountains, at first dowsed in fog, then uncovered by light and then it turns to night. Excellent progression and mastering and the use of the odd sound here and there is what sold me on it. One of the notable turn offs was actually the bass drum that comes in at 1:53, even though I'm an experimental artist, for some reason this just sounded really off or maybe too loud. In any case I hope you do well in the contest!

popraz responds:

Thank you ! Good luck to you too !

Hey

You just earned an earnest 10/10 here dawg. This song is so crazy, I feel like it should follow me around everywhere. It's very serene and yet a tinge of sadness is hung with it. It reminds me of Phantasy Star Online 1&2, Legend of Legaia and the Mother series (especially Mother 3) which are all major influences on my music. I'm a big fan of New Age music so this really took me away and lifted my mood when I watched the Monochrome Art Collab. Thanks for making such a great song!

Havegum responds:

Haha, thanks!
I appreciate it!

Hey wow!

I don't see how this is a forest 'lullaby' but on the other hand I don't see why this has a low score. This piece does remind me of the forest, for sure, but more of a... Panorama of a forest, an escape scene, or a boss battle in a videogame. Perhaps a name change is in order?

In any case, I enjoy this song! When I first started out making music solo about three years ago this is the kind of music I wished to create. Music that makes people think! Music that invokes deep thought without words.

There is only one part that I can think of that would possibly cause people to give you a low score here, which would be the transition at 2:12. The transition is very sudden and surprising, this could be causing people to feel stupid or inferior-- No I'm joking, haha. Generally, people don't like such a sudden and linear transition into the next part of a song like this but I, on the other hand, like that sudden change. It's kind of avant garde really so I don't see a reason to change it.

Ossikater responds:

I think I made it in 2 hours or so. But you have right. A name change could be in its order. I have taste for strange titles. And the sudden change is kinda off but I was new with the software at the time. Thank you for your wise words and the score!
